I provide housing counselling to individuals who require assistance in planning their housing search and in understanding their housing options. Through discussion and guidance, the participant is able to work towards finding housing stability. Housing crises vary based on individual situations, therefore a firm knowledge in social systems and in local agencies and resources are required. Innovation is also a large part of my role, as participants are often experiencing multiple complex barriers to sustaining housing, and creative problem solving is often the way to find sustainable solutions. I also advocate for individuals, help them know their legal and human rights in housing, and connect them with local resources. In addition to these responsibilities, I develop and lead educational workshops that are targeted to a variety of audiences ranging from service providers to participants. Since I began at Lutherwood, I have been fortunate to have been involved with the following projects: - Participated in a community advisory committee - Organized monthly educational networking meetings for local housing workers - Supervised and evaluated placement students in our resource centre - Collected and analyzed data for government reports - Lead facilitator on a national fundraising campaign for Raising the Roof in Waterloo Region. In my first year assuming this responsibility, I more than tripled the amount of donations received from previous years. The role of Housing Advisor requires flexibility, an ability to build rapport quickly with participants, competence in adult education and experience in crisis intervention and deescalation, and I have demonstrated expert abilities in each of these areas.
