About

As the head football coach of Texas State University since 2011, Dennis Franchione has led a team that he previously coached in the early 1990s. He guided the San Marcos team in Football Bowl Subdivision level competition in 2012 and helped the team join the Sun Belt Conference the following year. Dennis Franchione began his career in the early 1970s as the head football coach of Miller High School in Missouri and then coached high school football in Kansas until he accepted a position with Kansas State University as an assistant coach in 1978. After taking a head coach position with Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas, in 1981, Coach Franchione guided the team to a 14–4–2 record and a victory in the Sunflower Bowl. He subsequently spent five years with Pittsburg State University in Kansas and helped them achieve a 53–6 record, which earned Coach Franchione the first of two NAIA National Coach of the Year Awards. The year 1989 was a particular breakthrough season, with the team winning a record-setting 12 victories. Dennis Franchione received the Alumni Meritorious Achievement Award from Pittsburg State University, where he studied physical education.
