Durban, 4000, South Africa
Eighteen years employed as a scientist in the field of estuarine and marine ecology, specialising in macrobenthic invertebrates as indicators of ecosystem status and health. Positions held include junior scientist in an estuarine research group (1996/7); senior research assistant running research and commercial contract projects on estuaries and marine macrobenthic surveys (1997-2005); scientist developing an estuarine research portfolio (2006) and since 2007 senior scientist running the portfolio ‘Estuaries and Soft Sediment Ecology’. Technical expertise also extends into coastal freshwater environments (coastal lakes and rivers) to further a specialist interest in invertebrate ecology and the effects of abiotic constituents (water and sediment quality) on these fauna. This wide understanding of the transitions and linkages from one ecosystem to another has lead to research related to understanding of broad scale ecosystem function, connectivity and anthropogenic/climatic effects on the coastal environment. Professional experience has spanned applied and primary research areas and emanates from studies ranging from specialist commercial consultancies for issue driven projects to specific research funding grants for environment reporting, biological baseline studies and hypothesis-testing.
