A longtime executive with many years of experience in the nonprofit sector, Gillian Smith currently serves as the chief marketing officer of City Year, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping students stay in school and graduate on time, prepared for college and a career. As an organizational leader with City Year, she oversees all marketing activity and works hard to strengthen the public school system in the United States. Gillian Smith sets out to recruit young adults between the ages of 17 and 24, who typically spend one year working as AmeriCorps members full-time in schools, with students one on one and in small groups to help them improve their educational outcomes. City Year currently employs some 3,000 corps members, who receive a stipend for their service in mostly urban, high-poverty areas. Before joining City Year, Gillian Smith spent four years as the chief marketing officer of Teach For America, a fellow AmeriCorps program with a similar mission statement. She has also held top marketing positions with private entities such as Sunbeam, Coca-Cola, and Burger King.
