Entrepreneur Perry Mandera has acquired and sold several businesses over the course of his more than 30 year career, but it was ultimately in trucking that he found his niche. He learned how to drive a truck in the United States Marine Corps Reserves, turning it into his livelihood in the late 1970s and starting his first business in 1980. A community-oriented businessman throughout his career, Perry Mandera was the youngest individual ever elected to the position of Chicago Ward Committeeman; he served the 26th Ward from 1984 to 1988. In 1986, he founded The Custom Companies, a full-service transportation firm based in Northlake, Illinois. A pioneer in the transportation industry, Perry Mandera envisioned a different type of trucking firm when he started The Custom Companies. While traditional trucking businesses tended to focus on a specific area of product transport, he began offering a full range of services, including truckload, LTL (less than truckload), local and dedicated-contract cartage, and both domestic and international airfreight forwarding. Recognizing his contribution to the industry, in 2000 the Illinois Trucking Association included Perry Mandera on its list of the Top 100 American Transportation Executives of the Millennium. Possessing a long and admirable record of charitable donations and hands-on assistance, Mr. Mandera founded the company’s own philanthropic organization, Custom Cares Charities, which focuses on causes benefiting children. A member of the Board of Directors of the Jesse White Tumbling Team, the Walter & Connie Payton Foundation, and the Illinois Trucking Association, he received the Leonard Schaller Businessman of the Year Award in 2004. Perry Mandera also garnered a Giant Award in 2004, and The Custom Companies was the recipient of a Pat Summerall Champions of Industry Award in 2003.
